Thanks for checking out On the Rocks – The Flipside of Bipolar and Recovery.
My name is Elizabeth and I have to say that after four year of writing, this is by far the most challenging piece. How does one sum up where you’ve been, where you are and where you’re going, in one short and simple piece?
“I knew who I was this morning, but I’ve changed a few times since then.” ~ Alice in Wonderland
I suppose the answer lies within these words, but I’ll try to capture the essence and run with it. That is how it all started, afterall.
I am an artist and published writer, with 15 years of professional experience in creative fields. Much of my work expands into the nature of ongoing recovery from Bipolar One Disorder. I meld my chaotic, passionate and raw journey through Bipolar Disorder, Alcoholism and Stability into a myriad of short stories, poetry and art, attempting to offer a unique perspective and positive spin on two largely misunderstood conditions.
I am not an information board. Although I salute those who educate readers, I am not one to tell you what Mental Illness or Addiction is, focus on the negative or walk you through the ins and outs of recovery. Our journeys are personal and so is recovery. I embrace mine by creatively elaborating on true stories that look into the silver linings or the positive, and sometimes humorous, side of Bipolar and Recovery – The Flipside, as I like to call it.
It’s my way of healing, evolving, embracing myself in all my complexities, and standing up to stigma that so many of us have faced. To say that I am passionate about this after a lifetime of facing this head-on (personally and otherwise), is an understatement. And I hope that in your sifting through my words, that comes across as a brave step. Any step I can make in helping others to understand on a deeper level or relate to those that walk in my shoes, is a step I’m more than willing to take.
It’s real. It’s raw. It’s funny. It’s tragic and dramatic. It’s sensual and spiritual. It’s profound. It’s romantic. It’s insightful, thoughtful, adventurous, resilient and terrifying. All in one.
I’m not sure where this will all lead, but I intend to find out. And write about it.
